De Queen, Arkansas

In 1893, brilliant entrepreneur Arthur Stilwell secured $3 million from Dutch coffee merchant Jan DeGeoijen for financial assistance in building a railway from Kansas City to Port Arthur, Texas. To thank Jan for his help, Art named a small town in Arkansas along the path of his new railroad, “DeGeoijen”, but that didn’t last. In classic American fashion, all of those crazy vowels were ousted and the name was anglicized to De Queen.

Hopefully DeGeoijen returned to Holland before the local hooligans started calling him “Queen Jan”.

In 1897, local paper De Queen Bee was established, where to this day you can read news about everything from the De Queen Police to the De Queen Walmart. Wonder if they have a De Queen Dairy Queen?
