Diamond, Oregon

Dolly Kiger came up with the town name in 1874 in honor of the diamond-shaped cattle branding iron used by local rancher Mace McKoy. The relationship between Dolly & Mace is unclear. What is clear is that Charlie Hawkins built a stone building in 1907 that is still standing. It used to serve as the Diamond post office, store, and dance hall. It was also where local residents would gather each weekend for lively fiddle music, liquid refreshments and an occasional brawl. Once a bustling supply center for cattle and sheep ranchers, Diamond, Oregon’s peak population hit about 50. You’ll find this gem of a place at 42°47.9’ North, 119° 8.2’ West.
