Accident, Maryland

The exact history of Accident’s name remains largely a mystery, but most sources agree that the land was granted around 1774 by King George II of England to pay off a debt to George Deakins. Deakins sent out two groups of surveyors to find the best plot of land in that section of Maryland and, unknown to both, they started and ended at the exact same Oak tree. Deakins did the only logical thing: he called it “The Accident Tract.” The land wasn’t really settled until about 1800 when James and Pricilla Drane came to the area to grow tobacco. But they made a slight miscalculation—an accident, if you will—it was too cold to grow tobacco in Garrett County. Like George Deakins before them, the Dranes made the best of it and they stayed to grow other crops, as well as the little place that would eventually, in 1916, become known as the Town of Accident. Don’t trip & stumble on your way to Accident @ 39°37′41″N, 79°19′12″W. Find your place – find yourself.
